Wastewater treatment solutions for Olympus dairy, Romania

10 Mar 2020

An example of full-scale application of different wastewater treatment technologies, originally implemented under HydroThane, now operating as AquaThane, it can be found at one of Europe’s largest dairy facilities – the Brasov dairy factory (Fabrica de Lapte Brasov) in Romania.

This plant is actually the 2nd full scale biological treatment plant for the same group of companies – Olympus Dairies. The first built plant was one of similar size in Greece and is successfully operating 8 years already.

Situated in the picturesque city of Brasov, Fabrica de Lapte Brasov process daily 600 tons of milk with the latest technologically advanced dairy equipment, while their market share is constantly increasing to the first positions in the local market due to the high quality of the products.

Efficiency and biogas

The FLB anaerobic facility is designed to treat 3000 m3/day of wastewaters, including 350 m3 of cheese whey and the total COD load is approx. 30 tons daily, which equals to a city of 250.000 people population.

The plant delivers exceptional treatment performance, achieving over 85% Total COD removal and 97% Soluble COD removal. This ensures compliance with strict discharge regulations while keeping energy consumption and sludge production to a minimum, as all wastewater undergoes anaerobic treatment.

Furthermore, the facility generates up to 600 Nm3/h of biogas (equivalent to nearly 4 MW), at its peak, covering a large part (if not all) of the total thermal energy requirement of the factory.

The biogas is stored and utilized as a priority fuel in existing natural gas boilers, substituting the largest part of the energy requirements of the facility.
